Day 34 of 365:
Writing prompt topic:
The idea that the weather and people’s moods are connected is quite old. Do you agree? If yes, how does the weather affect your mood?
Sure, the weather affects the way we feel. Of course it does.
I live in a climate where the weather conditions change dramatically with each season. So much of what we do, from our lively hoods, to how we spend our leisure time, depends on the environmental conditions. When we can’t do what we want because “it’s too crappy outside” or “it’s too hot” we become grumpy. And when the sun is shines for the first time in 3 weeks at the end of March, or it is the first day we don’t have to wear a parka to go get the mail, well, those are the best days ever.
Take today for example:
On a day that saw unheard of high temperatures for the 3rd day of February, I would say yes, the weather definitely affects moods. All day long, people happily chirped about an “early spring” and being able to wear lighter jackets and leave their heavy boots in the closet. And while the day itself was dull and overcast, the warmth in the air made us all feel just that much happier. It gave us hope that maybe, just maybe, the coldness of winter will be a little less harsh from now on….
The weather forecasters are already telling us not to get used to these high temperatures, reminding us that tomorrow it will feel more like winter as we will go from 12+ back down to “that’s more like it” 2 degrees (Celsius).
Everyone else has been in a ridiculously good mood all day, but not me. I dread these drastic swings in the weather, for you see, I suffer from migraines.
There are so many different triggers that set my headaches off, it is hard for me to say which one is worse than all the others. But I can definitely tell you that changes in atmospheric pressure are at the top of my list. The migraine I have today has been brewing, slowly building like a thunder storm in August, for the past few days.
So yes, on a day when birds are singing, and the snow is melting, and everyone around me is so happy and content with our good fortune, where am I?
Hiding, in my room, drapes drawn tight to block out the offensive light, my head tucked under my heavy duvet. I pop codeine and curse the change in the weather. To say that I have been grumpy all day would be a bit of an understatement.
Yes, weather affects our moods. It’s either too hot, too cold, too cloudy, too rainy, too foggy….and for some of us, too migraine-y.
For those of you that were able to enjoy this bonus “spring” day, did you? When it is cold out tomorrow, and we are “back to normal” will you be happy or sad about it?
